Birthdays
Birthdays are a big deal in third grade! On your child’s birthday they will be in the spotlight. On their birthday, students will be allowed to share their favorite book with the class. Students will get a Scholastic book coupon, choose a prize, and we will make sure that we sing and celebrate.
Summer birthdays will be celebrated on their “half birthday.” The “half birthday” is the same date six month prior to the student’s actual birthday. For example: a student with a July 4th birthday will celebrate on January 4th. If you have any questions about this please let me know. Don’t worry, I will make sure to send a reminder home when a “half birthday” approaches.
If you would like to send a birthday treat for the class we will make sure to include that in our celebration. Please be mindful of the school’s healthy food policy when choosing a snack. From our student/parent handbook: "Burlington - Des Lacs Elementary School has instituted a healthier birthday or room party initiative. Instead of sweet treats on every student's birthday or room party we are REQUIRING students to choose a healthier food choice, suggestions are fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, crackers, etc. NO peanut butter or nuts. Non-edible treat suggestions are stickers, pencils, markers, erasers, bookmarks, etc." Treats that do not fall within these guidelines will be sent back home without being distributed. If you have questions about the healthy school initiative please contact the school office for guidance.
Absences and Tardiness
The complete attendance policy of Burlington Des Lacs Elementary School can be found in the student handbook. Parents are requested to call the school by 9:00 a.m. advising the school of their child’s absence that day. If the parent has not called the school by 9:00 a.m., the school will make contact with the parent.
If you need to pick up your child early for any reason you must check in with the office. The office will page the classroom and your child will be sent to you. Advanced notice will help ensure your student is prepared for departure.
Please note that the Third grade curriculum is very rigorous. We understand that some appointments cannot be avoided, but it is very important that your child has regular attendance through the end of the day. Students will miss out on important core curriculum if they leave early. We use every minute we have to ensure your child has the most opportunities for engaging learning.
Homework
We are going to be learning a lot this school year! I look forward to offering many opportunities for growth and practice in the classroom. Occasionally additional practice will help our students. When needed, I may send home a homework project, unfinished class work, or work a child missed because of an absence. Your child might need some help to complete these tasks. Please provide them with guidance, but do not do it for them. Please check their agendas nightly to ensure homework is done as assigned.
